How to Know When Your Parent Needs Help at Home

Start with everyday routines and a conversation about the help your parent would welcome.

It can be hard to tell whether a parent wants a little help or needs a different care arrangement. Start by looking at daily routines together, rather than trying to make a decision from one difficult day.

Notice what feels harder

Ask about getting dressed, bathing, preparing meals, keeping up with household tasks, and spending time with others. Which routines take more effort? Which tasks are being put off? These questions can help identify practical support needs.

Ask before deciding

Invite your parent to describe what they want help with and what they prefer to do independently. Write down their priorities and the times of day when assistance would be most useful.

Separate daily help from medical care

Non-medical home care can assist with everyday activities. Medical concerns belong with the person’s healthcare professional. A home care consultation can help clarify the daily tasks and schedule you want to discuss.

A Starting Checklist

  • Name the two or three routines that feel hardest.
  • Ask what help your parent would welcome.
  • Identify preferred days and times.
  • Discuss the support needed before committing to a care schedule.
